Passing of Sam Margheim on 3/17

The following notice was received from Jim and Judy Taylor on 3/17/18:

It is with a sad heart that we tell you that Sam Margheim passed away this morning, March 17,2018.  Linda was driving the 2 of them home late last night and when Sam had not said anything for a while. She tried to wake him with no result.  She pulled over and assuming a heart attack, called 911.  They responded quickly and attempted resuscitation for an hour while in the ambulance and at the hospital, but to no avail.

He will be cremated, but a service will wait until later this spring or this summer.

Sam & Linda were the General Chairman of the 53rd National Square Dance Convention in Denver in 2004, and have served on the National Executive Committee since then. Sam helped form the USA West Square Dance Convention, and served in many square dance capacities in Denver and Colorado State.  Sam & Linda are still head of the 53rd Grant Committee and Linda, Jim & Judy Taylor will see to it that the Grant Fund remains viable for the Colorado Square Dance Community.

News from the Denver Square and Round Dance Council

  1. For square dancers planning to attend USA West Convention in August, Ridge Runners have discovered that Amtrack has an overnight round trip tickets to Reno for $250.00 per couple.  They are looking into getting a group rate for even less money.  The Festival hotel has a shuttle from the train station.
  2. There are new USDA Insurance forms on the state website.  Insurance applications will be rejected if we use the older forms.
  3. Starting May 1st, If dancers participate in five Council sponsored demo dances in the next 12months, they will earn a STAR dangle with the year printed on it.
  4. The Fun Friendship and Fame Dance will be held at the Arvada United Methodist Church, 6750 Carr Street, Arvada on Sunday. April 8th.  Recently graduated new dancers get $5.00 tickets.  Tickets for everyone else can be purchased for $10.00 in  advance or $12.00 at the door.  Norm Terry and Ron Fuchs have tickets for sale.
  5. Council is looking for comments about the recent cancellation of future Valentine dances.  The questions are:  Should the Council Sweetheart Dance be continued?  Should it be called a Sweetheart dance or should it be renamed and moved to January?  Should the price be reduced so not to make it a fund raiser?  Should a charity be chosen to receive profits from the dance?  This year's dance earned almost $700.00 for the Denver Council.
  6. Denver Council has Square Dancing license plate frames available.  Jim Taylor and Ron Amsberry are selling them for $5.00 each.  If our club places an order for at least 10 we can get them for $4.00 each.

Betty Davee Fall

Here is an update from Rick and Rose: Betty and Bob are now residing at the Brookdale Arvada assisted living home. Betty said they have a beautiful suite, and she will receive rehab services there. Betty said she thought they would be hard to contact for the next week. Contact Chris Baum for her cell phone number. Betty sounded good from the message she left on my home phone. Continued prayers please. Rose and Rick

Jerry Gilbreath to call May 11 dance
Due to Kim Hohnholt's regrettable inability to call our May 11 dance, Jerry Gilbreath of Albuquerque has agreed to substitute. Jerry is a great caller and will be calling at the Colorado State Square Dance Festival June 8-10th in Denver. If you hesitated to sign up for the festival, you won't be once you hear Jerry.

Rocky Tops to Cease Operations

Regrettably, we just got this notice from the Rocky Tops. They've been a fun group and the place to go both for great dances and a chance to dance on any Thursday. We wish them well.

Greetings Colleagues, Friends, and Fellow Dancers.

This is to inform you that the members of Rocky Tops recently voted to dissolve the club due to low membership, declining attendance, insufficient manpower, and dwindling funds.

We will still be dancing at the Clements Community Center every Thursday night through our (projected) last dance on April 26, 2018. Please continue to visit our club and support our dances! (We plan to continue our participation in banner stealing for the duration.)

I would be glad to share additional information about this decision with anyone who is interested. Please direct your questions, comments, and concerns to me at debradeefawcett@gmail.com; call or text me at 303-669-1732; or seek me out in person.

Thanks for your attention, interest, and support.

Sincerely and regretfully,

Debra Fawcett, President, Rocky Tops Square Dance Club

Scootbacks Christmas Party Thanks
Many thanks to those who helped make our annual party a success. First, Gene and June Joerns ably assisted by Barbara Leggate and Marie Rupsa, the planners extraordinaire. Our setup crew was Lynette and Sherman Sipe, Fred and Betty Sinn, and Joan Potterfield and Marie Rupsa. Sue Bell cooked the turkeys and Marie cooked the ham. Brenda and Steve Soucie helped cleanup along with Bill VanderMinden. In fact, just about everyone helped clean the place up. Bob Davee was our irrepressible MC, and everyone brought wonderful food to make the dining truly gourmet. Randy the piano player was a wonderful touch, many thanks to Marie for arranging his playing.

Did you know that square dancing is the official folk dance of Colorado?  Did you know that square dancers dance to a variety of music, including, but not limited to, Big Band, Classical, Rock and Roll, Disco, 50’s, and Country music?  If you answered no, you just learned something new about square dancing.

Scootbacks is a mainstream and plus modern square dance club which also features round dancing. We normally dance on the 2nd and 4th Fridays from September through April. On 5th Fridays, we usually have an all plus dance. This season we continue our dancing until May 11th, 2018.

We begin each evening with pre-rounds at 7:30 PM (7:15 when Becky, Dave. Justin or John cue). Our square dance program begins at 8 PM, with one round dance between each square dance tip. Usually, the fourth tip is plus. Please see the calendar below for a schedule of our dances.

Our dances are held at the Broomfield United Methodist Church, located at 545 West 10th Ave., Broomfield, CO 80020. We dance in the church’s Family Life Center, which is accessible from the northeast side of the parking lot. Refreshments are always provided along with coffee and lots of cool water.

Singles, couples, families, and youth are always welcome at our dances.
For more information please call us at 855 SQDANCE (855 773-2623).
Upcoming dances can be viewed on the calendar below or on our dance schedule page.
